Diabesity Challenge Day #74 – The Beast is Down

Just a quick update folks. I am still sick and not working out. Yesterday I had to go into work an hour early so it got in the way of my time to blog. I have this same schedule next week and am not too happy about it. By the end of the workday yesterday I felt like total shit and was pretty much worthless when I got home. I come to find out that a couple of our police officers I work with have recently gone through the same thing and I was told I could feel like crap for up to two weeks. I will continue on a path of saving needed energy to keep my immune system strong by shying away from working out until I feel fully recovered.

I don’t feel to well today and I am debating whether to take the day off of work today or just go into work and try to push through another day. The weekend starts tomorrow and I will have plenty of time to rest.

strong-immune-system-doesnt-catch-a-coldAs I don’t normally get sick I sometimes wonder if I did this to myself by working out too hard. I really have been giving it that extra effort needed to build muscle but at 55 years old could I be overdoing it. As muscle is broken down through lifting weights the immune system kicks into high gear to provide necessary attention to the job of repairing the torn muscle tissue. With a schedule over the last several weeks of working different muscle groups for 5 days straight each week with just 2 days on the weekend to recover it certainly would be reason to believe that I did in fact weaken my immune system and leave it open to attack from foreign invaders.

I will have some time to research these thoughts and decide whether a change in my workout schedule is needed. I certainly don’t want to give up on the effort I have been putting forth as I am enjoying the progress I am making, but on the other hand I don’t want to break down my body to the point to where I get sick. It may be beneficial to rebuild my workout schedule to where I am doing more one day then spending the next day to recover. Day on, Day off. Hmmm. Such things to ponder…

Hate to hear you’re still sick. Hope you get over it quick but sometimes that’s the only way our bodies can make us slow down. Hopefully you won’t be down too much longer.

Hope you’re feeling better soon, Bill. I’m fortunate to have a wonderful doctor who reminds me, periodically, that control is an illusion. She tells me, “If you don’t pay attention, your body will let you know just who’s in charge…and it’s not you!” She’s funny –but, she’s also right. When I’m not listening to my body, it REVOLTS — not pretty. Good luck on your journey, Bill!

  3. Hope you get well soon. Please take plenty of rest. I myself am still reeling under the after shocks of the terrible flu I had last week. My doc told me to stay away from work & workouts for two weeks at least which is why I too am off exercising for the rest of this week.

  4. Had no idea that working out left the immune system busy with muscle repair…just didn’t connect the dots that it was the immune system that handled muscle recovery. I haven’t been doing any heavy weight training, but I walk like a mad woman and have been good keeping up with my body weight exercises, toss in a surprise trip for work (airplanes / airports are ripe with germs), and added stress and bingo, I’ve got crud. Makes sense now – thank you! I know to increase my vitamin C as I continue to build my exercise habits.

  5. PS – hope your recovery doesn’t take the full 2-weeks :-).

    Hope your feeling better….
