Here we are once again. It is Saturday and the first day of a two day rest period. For many people the weekend is a time to find comfort in simply laying on the couch all weekend watching their favorite sports for movies. It is a time to recover from a long, stressful week of a tough work schedule.
For the body builder it represents something a little different. For us it is a two day period in which we allow our muscles to recover and heal from a week long series of muscle break down routines. Muscles do not grow during the weight lifting sessions, they grown during the healing phase. These two rest days are filled with low intensity, fun things like biking, hiking or walking. We are not idle but on the the other hand we are not ripping and tearing muscle tissue either. It is a time to get things done around our homes and spend good quality time with our families. We love sports but we would rather be playing than watching. Some enjoy a round of golf while others gather to play a little two on two at the basketball court at the local park. We are not competing, but simply having fun and staying active. We may take the opportunity to catch an afternoon nap on occasions that never lasts more than an hour. We not only rest our bodies, but also rest our souls.
There is great confusion as most believe that the definition of “Body Builder” is one who works to develop their body and compete in muscle bearing competitions. We see images of incredibly large well defined physiques in magazines and on TV and call it “Body Building”.
My definition is a little different as I believe that anyone who is working out routinely to reach a specific goal and maintaining their bodies to a point of good health is a body builder. We all build our bodies in different ways. We have weight lifter, we have runners and cyclists and we have those who build there bodies around a specific sport like tennis. It doesn’t matter to much what you are doing as long as you are doing something you can define yourself as a “Body Builder”. You can call it physical training, getting in shape, working out or simply fitness. But in my eyes is is all body building.
