Another fine morning to wake up to lower blood sugar numbers and lower body weight. Woo Hoo! It is exciting and triggers thoughts of working out today here on a day of rest. These thoughts I must learn to resist and simply allow nature to take it’s course in repairing and restoring my body back to the point where I am actually ready to take on the next workout. Without this rest day I always take on the risk of increased inflammation which reaps havoc and tears apart any wishes of continued progress.
When we workout what we are really doing is tearing our body down, and during rest we build it back up. We should be working just as hard on the building up period as we do during the breaking down period. I will enhance this day of rest with quiet time spent in nature to observe the incredible world around me and take in the feel of wind and taste of the fresh air. I will listen carefully for the sounds of the leaves blowing in the wind and the birds of the sky.
As I placed myself on the list to get my hair cut at my favorite haircut establishment called “Sports Clips” I realized that I had almost a half hour wait. I decided to take a walk next store to Starbucks to get a small cup of black coffee. While waiting in line my attention was drawn towards a very obese woman and three overweight children who stood in line before me. As the woman selected drinks for the children and herself and also included a large order of cakes, cookies and danishes. The children were wining and carrying on the whole time until mom finally completed her order and ushered the children out of the store. I ordered my coffee and hung out for a few minutes looking at the calorie count of the foods that this woman had just ordered with misbelief. Each drink she ordered for the children contained over 800 calories and based on what she ordered it appeared that each child would receive two tasty treats from the desert counter which averaged about 350 calories a piece. That is a total of around 1400 calories for each child. I had to take a picture of the desert case just for this post. As I walked away from the counter I stopped and looked around to the realization that other than a few, most people in the store were either overweight or obese.
I thought about my own workout that morning and how I poured out my energy to capture the prize of burning over 400 calories on the treadmill. By eating just one of these tasty treats at Starbucks all my work would have gone by the way side. I usually don’t pay too much attention to what people order or how many calories each food is at Starbucks because in my mind it is just a great place to get a simple cup of delicious coffee. In my mind it has always represented a healthy place where people gather to meet and discuss business or there latest ventures with laptop sitting before them taking advantage of free WiFi. Yesterday my thoughts moved towards Starbucks being a haven for the sugar addicted.
I personally had a pretty good food day yesterday as I had a protein shake after my work out with a handful of vitamins. Lunch was, yes once again, a BLT. Dinner was lamb chops, asparagus and 1/2 of a baked potato. I felt a bit hungry in the afternoon and snacked on a small piece of left over pizza, some cantaloupe and blueberries.
