Diabesity Challenge Day #31 – Reflections on a Rest Day

IMG_0161So I have finished up the first 30 days of this challenge that I have created and I have sum it up with a mark of success. I started out the workout plan about two weeks prior to keeping track of things when I weighed in at 193 lbs. Since then my body weight has been reduced to 185 lbs. This is a loss of 8 lbs over a 6 week period. I am much more comfortable working on the treadmill and the bowflex and have shown substantial gains in both. Overall my waist size has dropped at least an inch as I am wearing the same shorts that I was wearing last summer. I believe that I gained big in the muscle department and can see it in the mirror. Although I hate posting pictures of myself, I decided that one won’t kill me.

I am marking this first 30 days which in reality should have been the first 6 weeks as the warm up or trial period to this one year venture. I have learned a lot about myself in this period where I started out with a bang by trying to do to much at one time. I was doing 30 minutes of treadmill and 30 minutes of strength exercises each day, everyday. It wasn’t long before I realized that something wasn’t working. I needed some time to rest. I then switched over to doing strength training one day followed by cardio the next, everyday. I had finally come to the conclusion that my body needed even more rest than it was getting and I am at a schedule now where I am doing strength training one day, cardio the next and on the third day I simply take a break from both. This has made a substantial change in my blood sugars as I am finding myself at a range of just over 100 on more of a consistent basis.

With the diet is still a work in progress and I am starting to revisit the possibility of a plant based diet with a limited amount of clean meats and fish at a minimum. I try to avoid those products that have a label but still find myself attracted to certain things at certain times.

This period was filled with certain limitations that caused problems in both diet and exercise. I spent a week on vacation in Florida and then started suffering from seasonal allergies. Both caused me to move off my path slightly but I did eventually recover and come back strong. The next 30 days should be a little easier to manage as I have incorporated the rest day and have no plans on going away for a week. Summer is just about here and with it plenty of sunshine and warm weather. This means that I will be spending more time outside and getting a little more exercise each day that is not planned. My hopes are that I will be able to drop at least two more lbs of weighable body weight, reduce my belt size by a 1/2 inch and see the fat around my mid section be reduced is size.
