Just 30 minutes on the treadmill does incredible things to not only my overall health but also my mind throughout the day. Although the body has many systems that are underlined in physical anatomy the body works as one. When we supply our bodies with healthy nutrients it effects every system in the body and this is also true for exercise.
With just a small routine of 30 minutes on a treadmill or walking at a steady pace around the neighborhood for 30 minutes just 3 days per week allows for increased focus and clearer thinking during the day. Without overeating it also gets our bodies in the mode of fat burning which I have emphasized in other posts to be a natural state of being.
During the winter months our bodies have the tendency of storing more fat to help us keep an energy store when food is difficult to find. Of course in the modern age we live in it’s not too difficult to find any type of food. But it wasn’t this way throughout history and our genes are a mirror to the lifestyle humans had to learn to endure.
We have an increased appetite in the winter in combination with the body’s innate, programed response to convert food into fat. There is also another underlying reason for our bodies to act in this fashion and that is the added energy we require to keep the body at 98.6 degrees. This is not to difficult to do when the temperature outside is in the 80’s but when we have endure winters that have consistent temperatures below freezing our bodies respond by storing up fat.
I naturally weigh in about 10 lbs heavier in the winter because of this and try not to get to crazy over the increase of body weight. But it is also just as important to remember that many of our primal generations that attributed to the development of this genetic disposition walked many miles hunting and gathering to acquire the food they needed to get through the winter. This is where I find that it is so important to walk in the winter. Whether by bundling up and taking a long walk or like me simply getting on a treadmill, the difference between no exercise at all in just incredible.
During the winter months humans typically hunker down and this is also a natural response to the conservation of energy to stay warm. While our ancestors saved their strength for building and growing food for the warmer months I believe that I too should keep strength exercises at a minimum. It is for this reason that while strength training is important also for our bone health it should be kept to a minimum. Spring will come around and I will feel a natural instinct to start lifting heavier weights, but for now I am simply going with nature.
So after a long hiatus of staying away from exercise I understand the need to hit the treadmill for 30 minutes or more at least 3 days per week. I am going to set my schedule for Mon, Tue and Wed on the treadmill and do a little strength training on the weekend. But I am limiting the strength training to just core exercises at a weight that is far less than I did over the summer.
