“The way of the Essentialist means living by design, not by default. Instead of making choices reactively, the Essentialist deliberately distinguishes the vital few from the trivial many, eliminates the nonessentials, and then removes obstacles so the essential things have clear, smooth passage. In other words, Essentialism is a disciplined, systematic approach for determining where our highest point of contribution lies, then making execution of those things almost effortless.” Greg Mckeown
OK folks, I have to announce that I have been turned on to a new way of thinking from a book I found on Amazon by Greg Mckeown call “Essentialism. Although I am just starting to get into the book I did a lot of research of the whole world that lives behind the title of essentialism and I have to say that I am pretty excited about it.
I can imagine by selecting those area’s of my life that I really love and applying a concentrated effort to them, like writing for example, and eliminating all the other crap, like trying to bring a computer back to life, I could become extremely good at it. This blended with the lifestyle of a minimalist or one who chooses to live a “Simple Life”, could bring about incredible positive changes. When one becomes an expert in just one thing rather than good at a lot of things he/she becomes valuable in that one area of interest. I will be spending some quiet time over the next week or so read this book and give you a good review based on my own life.
Right now I have about a half dozen books that I have purchased and are waiting for me to crack open in Kindle, but it was this book “Essentialism”, that I opened immediately and started reading. I dove into it with an open mind and noticed how excited I was to do so. This alone is a sign of exactly where my interest really lies. I went through all of the Minimalist books with the same fervent fever and I will learn all there is to learn about this way of life also. I don’t believe that essentialism is even new to my life as I remember teachers telling to pick just one that that I really love and become the best you can be at it. I did this many years ago with computers and it wasn’t long before I was building them, repairing them and earning some pretty good money and it was something that I loved doing. Now for this mornings numbers. My blood sugar this morning is a result of a day of eating a nice sandwich on a roll for lunch yesterday and pizza for dinner. Without a regular work day I had the freedom to eat out of character and I took advantage of it. No salad, no vegetables and I drank very little water. Tonight I will be picking our guests up from PDX in Portland and we will start the whole wedding celebration. I had the day off yesterday to make it to the rehearsal on time and that seemed to go extremely well. I had time to put some last touches on making the house comfortable for our guests, and ran to the store to pick up some last minute items. I will be making a pot roast today in the crockpot and will pick up 6 racks of ribs that I will slow cook tomorrow morning and let them marinate in BBQ sauce in the fridge to go on the grill at the house on the Oregon Coast Monday. I will be mindful of my eating today and my number will be better in the morning.
