Labor Day in America

Labor-Day-Workers-Facebook-CoverToday is Labor day and I am off. Sharon has to work to avoid the company taking her PTO time and my company will take 8 hours of the overtime I accrue in this pay period. When did this start happening to the American worker? It used to be that a holiday was a holiday and not the opportunity to exploit employees. I suppose that working in the public sector and being part of a union shielded me from all of these corporate games that are played. I heard it said that the business schools are teaching the principles of Scrooge where everything is built around the all powerful dollar and employees are simply replaceable. On the other hand I heard it said that small companies are scrambling to do whatever they can to keep their business afloat due to the high taxes they have to pay and the cost of mandatory health care for their employees. Whatever it is that is going on it certainly is creating a situation where Holiday’s are less enjoyable because money is tight and the bills we pay certainly don’t take a holiday.

No eating out yesterday and my numbers come down. But this might not be all that contributed to it as I spent a few hours in the yard yesterday catching up on lawn and garden care. It is coming close to the end of the season for many of the vegetables and I had a lot of chopping down dead growth to do. Of course with raised bed gardening I simply just lay it down in the beds to die and revitalize the soil for next year. I will be working on the front yard today and try to create that curb appeal as we anticipate placing the house on the market soon. It has been a very hot summer and the excess heat certainly did take its toll on the front garden.

  1. Everyone assumes today is a paid holiday if you are off. Wish we were paid for even 1 holiday during the year! Enjoy the day off!

I hear what your saying. I work in shipping/receiving and it used to be that we were wide open at the end of every month. For the past couple of years we are more and more that way all month long. If we take days of or have holidays then we have to pay the consequences of that by working even longer hours to “make-up” for the work that wasn’t done on those days off.
Because we ship product all over the world I sometimes wonder if the way that people work in other countries has caused some of this in our country. As well we increasingly have more foreigners working in our businesses, which I am not opposed to at all mind you, but if they have grown up in an atmosphere that does not have any sick days or holidays then they will be less inclined to appreciate our days off.
I have heard some foreigners refer to us as lazy or spoiled because of that. I can understand where they are coming from but their having that mentality may be rubbing off on our businesses.

Good Morning….when I did work, the facility I worked at in the beginning was great about all the holidays…you got holiday pay work or not….but as they years went on and the economy changed, for the worse, you had to work the holiday to get the extra pay with the exceptions of the federal holiday…and if you worked a double shift you only got the pay for 8 hours no matter and then the second shift was taxed to death and you basically worked for free….so I stopped doing that….however I loved working the holidays….even though I worked in an upper class retirement community, I found that families even visited I enjoyed being there on holiday….
I too have been going a little yard crazy….trying to get things organized for the winter….anticipating the wet weather ahead…but right now I am just trying to get through a week of high heat…LOL
Happy Labor Day my friend….your number look great…I finally got back to my first goal lost of 50#’s – and am now at 51#’s lose this morning….Yippeeee
I am out to water the yard….

I never was paid for holidays. My husband used to get paid for the holiday but now he just gets the extra vacation days. That would be great if we could afford to use them but as it is we can’t.
