Dreaming of Florida Recreation

indexI am starting to believe that a mild exercise routine each day may be better than working out like a college athlete. While I am continuing to address the issue I am having with gut bacteria I haven’t done much of a workout other than basic walking each day. My blood sugar has been staying steady and so has my body weight. I will soon be back into workout mode and I am definitely re-thinking my approach. While we all know that is important to keep things moving, at 54 years old I no longer believe that a stealth workout is the key to managing Type II Diabetes. I know that it is all about the diet and I feel that I have been doing a pretty good job with keeping my calorie intake down while still providing my body with the necessary nutrients it craves. I know that diet alone is important, but I also know that some form of exercise is also in order.

Although I am not in the position here in Oregon to make the changes I want I do look forward to moving to Florida where I know that I will be around like minded individuals around my age where I can introduce recreation back into my schedule. Softball, tennis and basketball are my favorites and I see myself actively playing these sports and moving away from the heavy weight lifting and treadmill. Getting involved in recreation is not only good for your body, it is also a good form of socializing.

Our intentions originally were to place our home up for sale on August 1st, but we had to second think this option as we will have many house guests and relatives coming in for an upcoming Wedding on September 20th. We want to give our full attention to our loved ones and being right in the middle of selling a house and all of the preparations for moving just don’t line up with that. One of the things that Sharon and I both agree on is not creating undue stress in our lives as there is enough stress just trying to get through a daily work life.

Although we are moving the date up I will still continue on my mission of reducing the amount of stuff we have and prepare for the move. We will have an upcoming weekend long yard sale followed by maybe selling things in Craigslist, trips to Goodwill and the dump. With a new date of October 15th for putting he house on the market I believe that it will give a greater edge on many things which of course include our savings.

About SimpleLivingOver50

At 53 years old I am starting to realize how life changes both physically and emotionally. I strive for a life of simplicity. I am winning the battle with type II diabetes, created a plan to have all debt paid off in 4 years including the house, taking advantage of every opportunity to live life to it's fullest through adventures in nature, hiking, biking, loving and learning.

Looks like you’ve found the “sweet spot” in your activity level manages your blood sugar and weight. That could change over time and you might have to tinker with the plan at some point, but as it stands, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

  2. It sounds like moving away from the too strenuous exercise model is going to be a good thing for you. I’m sorry you have to wait to advertise your home, but I agree with you that less stress is always better.

I think balance is the main thing in living a healthy life, we need to re-learn to listen to our bodies and if weight lifting is not needed any more, there are plenty of options out there. Good luck with your digestive problems and with the wedding! (watch out for wedding food!!!) 😉
