Strength Training Morning Mantra

inner-strength-21This morning is one of those mornings where I really don’t want to think too much. It is hot and so am I. My body is on fire for a good strong workout and all I can feel right now is a feeling of strength. I just want to rip and tear muscle to the point of pain.

With each routine I do this morning I can feel the rush of my blood pounding through my veins and filling my working muscles with heat and nourishment. Any sugar which remains in my blood stream is being depleted and deposited into muscle fibers as my energy levels slowly decreases throughout my session, and yet I pound on.

I think to myself, yes, this is they way I should be working out each time I pick up a heavy weight. I am strong and fierce, I am alive. I am a man on fire with deep primal urges to overpower my enemy, which in this case is the heavy weight I am lifting. I am strong today. The sweat pours off of my skin and flows down to cool my body. I stand tall, strong and hard as the mighty oak tree bearing the forces of a powerful storm. I AM MAN!

    love the blog – while I know first hand the rush of heavy lifting, be careful and temper it with lots of other stuff. I went from 6’4″ and 190 after the Army to 6’4″ and 240 in a year-ish of heavy lifting and exploding into huge size gains. Huge to the point I was being told I should compete. The feeling of raw power, the way everyone looked at me, the way my muscles rippled and filled to bursting….it was all so addictive.

    Today, I’m 48 – In the last 6 months, I’m down from over 300 pounds. I never stopped lifting – for the past 2+ decades….and the weight lifting ‘hid’ the weight gain well. Most people just assumed I was a burly, well muscled guy. I caught a kidney stone….it was like getting hit by a truck in a lot of ways. Sure, the pain was unreal and something I NEVER want again, but it made me sick when they tested my sugar, my blood pressure, cholesterol, and my liver tests. Nearly every test said I in danger zone and I never had more than a cold in the past 3 decades since I was a teenager! My 52″ chest and 20-21″ arms and the rest of me were hiding some pretty bad stuff inside my shell.

    After recovery and a lot of reading, I immediately threw out my protein shakes, my pre workout pills and mixes, my post workout stuff, and my vitpaks. I changed the diet (drastically!) as recommended by the dr’s, (lots of veggies, little meats, and I do eat old fashioned oatmeal [soluable fiber] every AM for my heart and BP. I try hard to limit my sugar intake and my salt intake as well – I even printed out all the menus for the local resturants so I could try to stay under 500 mg of salt on a dinner out. (amazing how much salt is in prepared food!)

    I went back to running, jogging, and power-walking – whatever I can push myself to do each day at 5AM – followed by a jump rope/burpees/mountain climber routine. This after nearly 3 decades of telling myself cardio was something for sissies…that I was a weightlifter! It was really hard on my old knees to run again – at over 300 pounds…but I did what I could, and I am a better runner now. I do yoga/stretching routines a few times a week on the evenings, Some nights I ride the mountain bike, and I go for a long trail run – for fun! – 2 times a month, and my weight has dropped around 50 pounds so far. (I want to get down to 225 which would just barely get me out of the “obese” chart on the BMI tables. I’ve moved to body-weight stuff like push-ups, pull-ups, lunges, and dips as a break from the iron. I do these 3 nights a week. (I do miss the iron- it’s been such a part of my life for so long! I seem to still find a way to lift heavy once a month – perhaps just to prove I still can??? dunno….)

    While my numbers have dropped from some pretty scary levels in a lot of categories, I still have borderline HBP, but it’s come down a lot, my cholesterol is so much better it’s nuts (normal now) and my blood sugar is almost within normal range as well. The dr’s are surprised I could do it w/o the meds they all wanted me to be on…..but I wanted to do this on my own, or at least try.

    “Iron” is SO addictive to some personalities…I know it was for me. I hope you temper lifting with some other stuff over time too. And the beer. lol! I know everyone has to have their reward, but I wonder effect what 2-4 beers has on the bodily systems on a regular basis? I confess, I have no idea as I am the son of an alcoholic who drunk himself to death and I have no desire to drink. (personal – that’s me – and everyone is different. My wife enjoys a glass of wine at dinner sometimes and I have zero problems with anyone drinking any amount they want, I just wonder how it effects certain conditions?)

    I give you so much credit – you post your successes – you post your failures. I’ve only been reading for the past week or so, but I read backwards some and I read all your updates. It’s brazen. It’s open. It’s honest to the point we can read your pain when it presents itself. Thank you for all the postings and I really, truly, hope you continue on your quest and you whip these these issues – however you choose to do it! – and have a fantastic 2nd half of life! (I plan on being 100 years old and healthy, fit and active, so I bet you do too. ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Wow John, what an incredible success story. I keep striving to mix things up as far as heavy lifting and cardio are concerned. I like to go from to the other as I enjoy building muscle I also enjoy striving for a low BMI. Ultimately it is all about keeping my blood sugar low. Most of the time I eat foods from nature, but do sometimes get lost in the things that are not so healthy. The beer is a pretty new thing for me as I discovered micro-brewery’s here in Oregon. Thank God I will be moving to Florida where the beer pretty much sucks. LOL. Sorry Floridians, but it’s true. I am very impressed with your willingness to avoid the medications that your doctors want you to take and take personal control of your situation. Excellent Job!
