Why I Decided to Advertise on my Blog

Today I am declaring a day of healing. I have a bit of soreness in my ankles and shoulders and I know through reading my body that it is time to pull it back and relax. My morning glucose reading is elevated to 105 which isn’t bad given that I ate a half of a baked potato with dinner last night, but my weight dropped to close to a pound and a half. The weight loss I can attribute to the continued run up the stair every hour at work so I believe that this is working.

Yesterday I did a phone interview with one of the public relations representatives at Bowflex. For me Bowflex has been a major part of my recovery process and I wanted to share my story. It is a product that I believe in and know that without it I may not have come as far as I did. Phone interviews are a bit tough to do, especially at work and I do hope that I got all of my facts correct, but I believe that I did. If the article get’s published I will share it here on my blog.

guest-bloggingYou may have noticed that I placed a Bowflex banner on the right side of my website. This is a decision that was difficult for me to make because as you know, I am a minimalist and I really wanted to keep my blog advertisement free. Recently I have had a change of heart about this after reading the book “Stuffocation”. Even a minimalist buys things, but the difference is that we buy things that bring value to our lives. I can say that the Bowflex machine has brought great value to my life as I use it just about everyday.

Another company that brings value to my life is Amazon.com. Although I don’t purchase a lot of products through them they have been of great value to me as I love to download a book from the Kindle Store to my Iphone at a discounted price and be able to read the book anywhere I have my phone. I am thinking about creating a page under the top tab called, “The Books I Read”. On that page I will list just those books that have brought value to my life.

With both these options it of course means that I will earn a small amount of money, but as you know a WP Premium Site costs about 100.00 per year. I figure that I may be able to cover that cost through just this little bit of advertising. Why not? Of course I will not be placing any ad on my site that I don’t truly believe in or hasn’t proven over time to be of great value, it has to be something that has improved my life. And I will not flood my pages with ads just for the sake of making money. Man, I hate when people do this. I hope no one feels offended by these choices and if you do please let me know.

  1. It’s your site. Why do you ask permission? If it offends, oh well.

    • I think it’s out of my own personal beliefs. I know that sometimes when I see advertising on a blog it makes me think that the writer may just be posting to earn profits rather than being genuine. Not all of the time, but sometimes. I don’t want anyone to feel this way about my blog.

I don’t see anything wrong with advertising on your site. If Bowflex didn’t advertise in the first place, you probably would not have known about it. I think we should just do what we want to sometimes and not seek other’s approval so much. Yesterday I put on my sunglasses as I was heading out in the evening. I asked my husband if he thought that it was too late to be wearing sunglasses. My 6 year old son chimed in “Mommy, you can wear your sunglasses if you want to wear your sunglasses”. That made me feel so free. Sometimes we should just do what we want to do just because we want to do it, as long as no one will be harmed by it. You have made an excellent choice!

I have to agree with the first comment. Having recently been called in to the bosses office for “offending” a co-worker, this topic is on my mind at the moment. In the end, the person you must be true to is the one in the mirror. it is fine that you explained why you made this decision. But IMHO, if you have carefully considered something and made a decision, then stick with it. If someone finds it offensive…screw ’em. There are almost 7 billion people on this planet. you cannot please them all. In my personal case, I do not even desire to try.

    My two cents.

I certainly am not offended by this decision. In fact I am inspired! I also do not worship the Almighty Dollar but it is so true that almost anything we require in this world has to be acquired through the use of money. Stay strong.
On another note I am thrilled to hear of the weight loss: remember the Chinese saying about walking ten thousand steps per day?
God bless you in your endeavours and keep up the motivation for the rest of us.

  5. I fully support your decision. You help so many people with your blog. And we all use products daily that improve our life. Why should you advertise for free? It is obvious that your blog is not commercially motivated. There is absolutely nothing wrong with you being compensated for advertising. Your integrity is seen in the fact that you only promote products you believe in. Bravo!

Very well said! And I agree with the others that this is your site and you are the one in control. And since you like kindle books would you mind if I gifted one that I collaborated on to you? It’s about using the paleo diet and meal prep systems to make healthy eating more convenient.
